Resources

The following resources were developed for children involved in ACE Centre North’s ‘Let’s All Play’ Project 2007-2009. The resources have been created in both Boardmaker and Communicate in Print software programs. You will need the software to download the files. A screenshot illustrates each resource.

Resources created in Mayer-Johnson’s Boardmaker software use the Picture Communication Symbols.

Resources created in Widgit’s Communicate: In Print, have the Widgit Symbols.

It will always be necessary to create personalised AAC resources; however we hope that by sharing these it may help you to get started.

2 Choice A5 Communication Book

A simple communication book can be introduced with just 2 choices. This gives the child an opportunity to make simple choices and begin to influence their environment. In this example, Edie is able to choose who has a turn at a game or activity, either herself or “you”.

In this A5 book, the photos or symbols are attached with Velcro to allow them to be quickly pulled off and offered to the child, or attached to an e-tran frame to teach a child successful communication through eye pointing. 2 Choice Communication Book

4 Choice Communication Book

Here is a book with 4 choices in. This may be used with a child who is using listener mediated scanning as an access method.

The categories in this book are drinks, food, places, family, friends and toys. The child also has an option for telling the listener that it is none of these. 4 Choice Communication Book

This is an 8 location communication book which is being used via a listener mediated scan to make a choice of which table top activity to carry out. It is organised into an A4 file in landscape. 8 Location Communication Book

The 8 location communication book could also be for a child who is using their fist to point or is just being introduced to pictures or symbols, so a larger picture is easier to process. This particular one is organised into a TalkBook.

3x4 A5 Landscape Communication Book

This Communication Book has the vocabulary arranged in a landscape format. This was developed for Samuel who found it easier to reach the symbols when he moved his hand left to right. The core vocabulary is on a single page which is attached to the file and folds out like a flap.

This template can easily be made into an A4 portrait Communication Book if preferred. Instead of placing the core vocabulary to the left, it is on the back of each communication page as in the illustration. 3 x 4 Communication Book Portrait
